Establishing the Basics of a Beneficial Skincare Routine: What You Need to Know?

skincare routine - holistic skincare - Beginner skincare routine

Each woman is unique on her own, having plenty of features that give her a distinguished beauty. One of the things that are different for almost every one of them is their skin. However, no matter whether you’re genetically blessed with flawless skin, or have or are currently struggling with an issue, one thing is certain- you need a personalized skincare routine that will deeply nourish your skin and improve its health. Unfortunately, not many women know how to approach this task. To help you out, we’re here to set the skincare routine basics each of you should follow to enjoy a radiant and healthy-looking appearance!

Basic overview of the notion of skincare

Although we’re quite sure you’re familiar with what skincare means, perhaps you didn’t go much in-depth to understand everything this notion represents. In essence, skincare understands following a routine that provides the utmost care and protection of your largest organ- the skin! Not only do you need to build a skincare routine that will nourish it, but also one that will help protect it from the many pathogens and environmental pollutants, as well as UV rays.

So, an important part of the skincare routine basics is understanding what the concept actually represents. The main reason why you should be interested in starting this venture is to find the best way to keep your skin nourished, protected, and, ultimately, youthful. Many women nowadays reach for products with an anti-aging level on them, not understanding that they need much more than that. Namely, your skin’s health and youthfulness result from the variety of basic steps you take to keep it clean, toned, and moisturized. Believe it or not, applying a formulation with anti-aging properties comes last!

Therefore, if you’re eager to learn more and successfully build a beneficial routine, keep reading to discover all it takes to improve your skin’s appearance and function.

What you should know before you build a skincare routine

We always say that the more you know, the better, but it doesn’t mean that you should become a skincare expert. However, it’s important to get started with the basics, the most important of which is finding your exact skin type.

You probably already know there is more than one type of skin, each with its own unique features and requirements. So, the logical answer to how to establish a skincare routine is to first figure out what type of skin you have. Only then will you know which products to choose to give it the best possible care, tailored to its unique requirements.

There are 5 main skin types, each of which we’re going to discuss below. Hopefully, you’ll be able to easily figure out which is yours and continue exploring the rest of the skincare routine basics you should know!

  • Normal skin- This type doesn’t display any dry, oily, or red zones. It generally isn’t prone to breakouts, flakiness, and irritation, and it has small pores and a smooth texture.
  • Dry skin- Dry skin usually feels tight and dry, often having specific areas that are particularly flaky and irritated. It looks and feels dehydrated and is characterized by rough texture, increased wrinkles, and visibility of fine lines.
  • Oily skin- This skin type appears shiny and oily, with a slick oil residue on its surface, particularly on the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin). It is usually more prone to acne and breakouts due to the sebum clogging the pores.
  • Combination skin- If you’re dealing with dryness and oiliness at the same time but on different zones on your face, you probably have combination skin. Typically, the T-zone is oily, while the skin around the cheeks and yaw is particularly dry.
  • Sensitive skin- Finally, you will know you have sensitive skin if it’s almost always red, itchy, and inflamed. It easily reacts to outside conditions, as well as on certain products and ingredients you use.

  • If you’re still unsure about your skin type, be sure to take our quiz here! This is a very important step in learning the skincare routine basics because it will allow you to choose the right products to treat it and improve its health and appearance significantly.

How to establish a skincare routine

After you figure out your skin type, you’re finally ready for the part you’ve been eagerly waiting for from the very start. It’s time to share the essential tips on building a beginner skincare routine, so you’ll know where to start. Here is what you should consider:

  • Keep it simple- no matter whether you’re just starting out or are looking for a change, keeping to a simple skincare routine is the way to succeed. Create a routine with only a few steps, using simple but quality products. The most important thing is to keep an eye on the ingredients label, making sure you choose one that contains beneficial and harmless ingredients.

  • Start with a cleanser- choose a gentle cleanser and use it as the first step in your routine. It’s very important to start with clean skin, allowing all the other products you apply to absorb well.

  • Find the right moisturizer- the next step should be moisturizing your skin, for which you should find a beneficial product. Look for ones that contain ceramides and hyaluronic acid, as these are best to give your skin a boost of hydration.

  • Don’t skip the SPF- this is a very important step, which, unfortunately, many women skip. So, after applying the moisturizer, apply a mineral SPF cream to protect from the damaging UV rays. And remember- you should also apply SPF on a daily basis, even in winter.

  • Having a nighttime routine is also important- the nighttime routine is, more or less, the same as your morning one, just without the SPF application step. So, cleanse your skin, apply a night cream before you apply a moisturizer, and you’re all set!

  • Remember to give your routine time to work- don’t expect immediate results. However, if you follow the skincare routine basics mentioned above, you should rest assured you’ll enjoy optimal results.
